In a career filled with wild ups and downs, Antonio Bray finished on top.

After wearing out his welcome at two schools before settling at Arleta High for his senior season, Bray, an explosive running back, earned MVP honors Sunday for the East in a 20-17 victory over the West in the 14th annual Daily News All-Star Game before a crowd of about 3,500 at Birmingham High in Lake Balboa.

The East still trails 8-6 in the series, but has won three in a row and four of the past five.

Bray scored on a 59-yard punt return and had a key 36-yard reception to set up the tying touchdown to help the East rally from a three-point deficit in the fourth quarter, as Notre Dame of Sherman Oak's Eric Solis kicked the winning 35-yard field goal with 48 seconds remaining.

"It's like a dream come true. this is the kind of thing that every football player dreams about," Bray said.

In the opening minutes, Bray scored on this 59-yard punt return the first time he touched the ball, cutting to his right, faking out a couple of defenders, then showcasing his acceleration down the sideline.

"If teams are going to kick me the ball, I'm going to try to score a touchdown every time," Bray said.

Bray's performance came as no surprise to East coach Hector Valencia fo Burbank. The coach espected it.

"Antonio has been doing it to us all week in practice,' Valencia said.

On Bray's 36-yard reception, Ryan Kasdorf of Notre Dame was hit as he lofted the ball down the sideline. Kasdorf didn't see Bray catch it, but he heard the roar of the crowd. Solis soon cashed in with a 30-yard field goal to tie the score at 17-17.
Then Burroughs of Burbank's Kohl adams-Hurd came through with an interception a few plays later to help set up the winning field goal.

Brando Tessar of Chaminade of West Hills was a standout for the West. In what was expected to be his last football game before heading to Oregon on a baseball scholarship. Tessor caught three passes for 117 yards, including two touchdowns, to earn team MVP honors.

"I thought it was going to be my last game, but now I'm not so sure. I think I want to try to play both sports in college," Tessar said. "This was just so much fun. It's the best feeling in the world."

In what turned out to be a sloppy game for both sides, the East  totaled just 207 yards but executed successfully at key moments.

Notre Dame's Kenny Boggs rushed for 43 yards on eight carries, including a 5 yard touchdown. Burrough's Dalton Williams added 23 yards on three carries, and Bray rushed for 18 yards, including a 9-yard run in which he started to his left, took a wide u-turn, then weaved his way down the right sideline.

"The guy trying to tackle Bray almost broke his leg when Bray cut back - I've never seen anything like that before," East teammate DeAndre Roberts of Sylmar said.

Hart of Newhall's C.J. Reyes completed 4 of 11 passes for 93 yards for the West, including a 59-yard touschdown to Tessar.

El Camino Real of Woodland Hills' Ra'Shon Harper added 55 yard rushing on four carries and two receptions for 55 yards.

The West amassed 192 yard in the first half while holding the East to 58 yards and two first downs, but the West led by just three points on a 34-yard field goal by Birmingham's Brian Gutierrez as the halftime clock expired.

Kasdorf was 0 for 3 in the  first half and finshed 1 for 6 for 36 yards.

The East finally got untracked in the third quarter, driving 90 yards on 11 plays, as Boggs scored on a 5-yard sweep. The key palys on the drive were a 14-yard pass from La Canada's Rocky Moote to Boggs, and Bray's 9-yard run.

The West had a chance to reclaim the lead, driving 48-yards on four plays before El Camino Real's Ryan Meier - who threw a 44-yard touchdown to Tessar earlier in the fourth quarter for a 17-14 lead - was intercepted by Loyala's Nat Bellamy inside the 10 yard line, one of several key defensive plays for Bellamy including a fumble recovery.

THE STARS WILL SHINE ONE MORE TIME!!!!

And once again, The Valley Youth Conference is proud to sponsor the annual Daily News High School All Star Game. The game provides an opportunity for the area's outstanding graduating seniors to play in what will be their final interscholastic football game. Some of them are moving on to play at the next level, several others could be playing their last football game. Regardless of their next step this game brings out the competitive juices and provides wonderful moments and very often some high drama.

Without question, this is the San Fernando Valley's premier event for prep football, as the top players from The Valley and several neighboring communities come together for one last chance to represent themselves, their schools and their community.

Without youngsters there would be no competition and without adult volunteers there would be no Conference. The countless hours contributed by hundreds of volunteers - such as those who have made this game possible - serve an even higher goal than scoring touchdowns. While teaching the fundamentals of blocking and tackling, the volunteer coaches, team moms, team managers, club presidents and conference administrators are providing the more vital fundamentals of life. Boys and girls in the Valley Youth Conference are exposed to the need and benefits of discipline, sacrifice, responsibility and team work. Lessons that last a lifetime and prepare them for their chosen endeavors, on or off the field. Our grateful thanks to each and every one of these volunteers.

We know that friends and family will be in attendance, we would like to invite all the members of all the Conference clubs to The Game. Watching these young men is always a heart warming experience. Their effort on the field and in the classroom that allow them to  be included in this game is an inspiration to all of us.

Remember, before the High School game is played there will be another game, the Valley Youth Conference Midget All Stars will be playing an All Star team from Orange County.

Join us for the day, cheer them on, and remember there are no losers out there.
